1986
1986 was the first year for a C4 convertible.
Regulations required Center High Mounted Stop Lamps (CHMSL) starting in 1986. The same arrangement (mounted at the rear of the roof) would be found on 1986 through 1990 Corvettes and all years of the ZR-1. Convertibles had their CHMSL mounted in the center of the bumper.
Wheel centers are polished and unpainted with the radial slots painted Argent Gray. 1986 was the only year with this wheel treatment.
1987
Wheel centers and the radial slots were painted Argent Gray for 1987 only; this is the only differentiation of the 1987 Corvette.
1988
A special edition 35th anniversary was available for 1988. It was all white, including the belt line, interior and wheels.
Left: Stock 16" wheel was exclusive for 1988. Right: 17" wheel was part of the Z51 and Z52 suspension upgrade option.
1989
There was no real distinction between the exteriors of the 1988 through 1991 Corvettes. One interior update was the appearance of a six speed manual transmission, which would be part of all clutch activated Corvettes through the C6 generation. Previous to 1989, the C4 Corvette manual transmission was a four speed with overdrive.
