More on the California Labor Dept Sweeps

Some additional facts you might find interesting about the recent sweeps conducted by the California Labor Dept Sweeps:

1. Of the $771,850 in fines only 7% were levied against businesses who were members of a trade association.

2. Of the 231 businesses that were were part of the sweep, 65 of them were fined for either not registering according to the law, or for not renewing their registrations in compliance with the law.
Many of these operations were detail businesses, who, if members of the IDA would have been informed that it was their obligation to register by the IDA.

3. The registration is not a one time thing. The fines for not renewing a registration are $100 each calendar day, not to exceed $10,000. It only costs $250 to register or renew.

5. Exemptions from the law are businesses that have no employees. Once on the site read this section: "What does the term 'employer' mean?"
