Buying a '69 2+2 auto

Looked and drove a 2+2 auto the other day. A person who owns &
restores older cars told me about this car - in fact he will be driving from
CT to NY to check it out & make sure it is worth buying it & of course he
will fix it for me. Person selling car opened the hood - it looked clean to us
(my husband was with me). Of course there are some (guess) minor work
to be done - back door & both side doors need to be realigned, drivers
door handle (outside) does not work from outside - need to reach in when
window is open and release from there. also, drivers side mirror needs to
be readjusted & made tighter. Paint looks ok (it is white, I will have it
repainted, but leave it the Jag white color), black leather inside (looks fine
to me), but want to change to red interior. A/C has not worked for about
1-1/2 yrs, but guess that can be fixed. Of course, i am used to driving newer cars (have a BMW Z3 & 330i) so cannot compare driving capability,
but my first car was a '70 Toyoto corolla, so remember no power steering &
since I am driving for over 30 years already, can get used to Jag's brakes.
Also, owner of car said he does not use in rain.
Of course, this car will be fun to drive & watch people's expression when
I am in it!!!
Guess you can say this is considered mid-life's toy, but instead of a male
mid=life, this is for a female's mid=life.
the mechanic going to look at it said if he sees any major problems
(i.e. frame condition) he will not let me buy it.
Please let me have any and all comments - would prefer an e-mail
(jhs96@yahoo.com)
Thanks for your help!!!!

<HTML>Joanne:

The part about "back door & both side doors need to be realigned, " is of some concern. It could be the sign of major structural damage.

It is good that you have someone knowlegeable look over the car. Hopefully he will be able to resolve the major damage question. I assume your mechanic is familiar with E-Types?

You should understand that a 2+2 with an automatic transmission is on the low end as far as E-Type value goes. Don't expect it to appreciate much, especially campared to other E-Type models. If you want this car for yourself/don't intend to sell it soon and you like the 2+2 with the AT, then go for it.

Buying a used E-Type, or any other classic car, is serious business if you want your ownership to be a happy one. There are many problem cars out there and you'll need patience sorting them out. Do not buy something without a full inspection and an understanding of what you are getting into.

When you do find a good one, do not hesitate to pay top dollar. The old saying goes: You are much better off with a sorted car than a sordid car.

Visit <a href="[www.employees.org]; for an interesting look at what is involved in fixing a E-Type.
