1972 GTO Clone, anyone interested?
April 20, 2003 05:58PM
Hi gang and all the best.

I recently aquired a 72 GTO clone and I'd like to see if anyone is interested in buying it. Please see below some facts and let me know if you have any questions.

Cheers,

Ken

1972 GTO Convertible clone (originally a LeMans Sport Convertible).

This car is exactly as a 1972 GTO convertible would have appeared (there was only 1 GTO convertible produced in 1972). It recently took 3rd place Best of Show in the Burtonsville (MD) Day Celebration annual car show. It took 2nd Place Best in Class at the Towson Town Festival annual car show in 2002. Correct GTO 455 High Output badging and Ram Air insignia’s. Correct GTO grill and side vents. Car is equipped with a 455 Ram Air IV V-8. The Ram Air system is complete, correct and functioning. The Muncie 4 speed has the correct Hurst shifter with T-Bar handle. In the rear is a Safe-T-Track 3.73 posi rear, with 4 - 15” American Racing Torque Thrust wheels with new BF Goodrich radial T/A’s on all 4 corners. The car is also equipped with soft ray tinted glass, remote mirror control and glass rear window

BODY:
Excellent rust free floors, frame and trunk (and NO patches either!). A '71 GTO front clip was installed as well as new front and rear valances. Reproduction repair panels were used where necessary. This car is NOT a bondo sculpture! No evidence of wreck or rust damage either. The body is straight as an arrow, no waves or ripples. The body panels are correctly aligned with the correct GM shims and not washers at the fenders. The gaps between panels are far more consistent than ever came from Pontiac. A cherry unbent FACTORY STEEL Ram Air hood was installed and an original hood tach that occupies the original opening. The high-grade convertible top has all the correct padding installed and is in perfect condition. The glass rear window is as new. A true artisan as evident in the amazing paint job repainted the car. The car was painted with several coats of Fire Engine Red, and hand sanded. Then layers of iridescent Pearl coat were meticulously applied and color sanded, then polished to an amazing shine. The finish is very glossy and quite attractive. The car has great curb appeal with the eye popping Pearl coated finish, aggressive looks and stance. The overall fantastic appearance generates frequent conversations and compliments. It is a real head turner.

INTERIOR:
Newly upholstered front bucket seats are comfortable even during long drives. The dash is uncut and still houses a factory AM radio. The door panels have original GTO emblems on them. The car is equipped with top of the line Sun Pro mini gauge pack for their known accuracy. There is a small toggle switch on the bottom side of the dash under the steering column (out of site but easy to get to) that operates the auxiliary electric cooling fans on the new 4-core radiator. The carpets are Year One reproductions and are in excellent condition. The correct high-grade reproduction rubber Pontiac floor mats from Year One is included. The correct 4-speed center console is in excellent condition. The general condition of the interior is excellent.

MECHANICAL:
The 455 V-8 engine is in excellent running condition and is extremely reliable. The HEI
ignition has been replaced by a new Accel electronic ignition for reliability. A high
torque starter ensures starting even on the hottest of days. The Ram Air air cleaner
has a new K & N air filter. The Muncie 4 speed was just rebuilt. The 2 ½” Flowmaster
American Thunder mandrel bent exhaust system was welded on, not clamped and is also
new. The correct quad exhaust tips are in excellent condition. The front suspension was
overhauled also by the previous owner including coil springs, links, all control arm
bushings, upper and lower ball joint, shocks, etc. The rear springs are also like new. The
power disc brake system (disc front, drum rear) is regularly serviced and all components
operate as intended including the parking brake. The car runs like it should, sounds like a
musclecar, rides and drives as it should. Also the gearing is well suited to relaxed
cruising as well as in town driving. The car is driven on weekends mostly during the
warm months and has never seen snow since its body off restoration.

VEHICLE CONDITION:
The condition of the garage kept car is as described above, however there are a few items that could benefit from some attention. This car was originally equipped with factory air conditioning. The previous owner removed the compressor and brackets when he had the motor rebuilt. The AM radio is also out of commission, and I haven't even given it a look as the real music comes from the tail pipes! The factory in dash clock does not work. There is a small (less than dime size) flaw in the paint on the nosepiece. (Does not stand out but you may notice it when you are up close waxing it). I personally would have no reservations about driving this car just about anywhere. The description is as accurate and honest as possible.
