What is the proper oil ratio for a vespa 400?

ok , normally in france : for on litter >one turn on the pump , you have a 2% mix

I take it you're in the States. I stand corrected so go for the 2% mix as stated (50:1). It has been some time since I drove a Vespa 400, it was an American model import purchased in France while on vacation and as I recall the tank held five US gallons. Have a good time at micro south 2008, Chuck

Yes, 50:1 or 2 percent is recommended in the Vespa literature. Some use a higher oil ratio, certainly would improve lubrication but add to ash and junk in the muffler and exhaust system and perhaps plug fouling. The newer synthetic or semi-synthetic 2-cycle oils have lower ash and residue and can probably be used at higher concentration without problem in the exhaust system or plug fouling. I use Yamaha 2S at 50:1 or slightly higher concentration (lower ratio).

PS, if you really want to get onto 2-cycle oil stuff, go to [www.sea-doo.net] for one. The Vespa engine was built before much of the current 2-cycle oil technology. They can run rather hot but is not a high rpm high performance engine. In any case good 2-cycle oil protection is important.
