Cooking Oil in Most of the Car Help!!!
September 24, 2005 04:54PM
<HTML>Scenario:

Bran New Smart 4 Four black upholstery interior, sees a 5 liter (1.32 Gallons) can of sunflower seed cooking oil run all out into back seat, drip through seats onto floor, gets in carpets, and runs through cracks near stool fittings onto bottom under all fixed carpets. owners ofcourse try to do their best, to get most out, but to little help.
In the spanish sun it smells a lot like a deep frier right now....

What we done so far:

Took out all seats, the back seat where it went into, and unmounted fixed floor carpets.
The carpet is in two pieces, where carpet like on top, then a hard fiberglass thin layer, and then under that pressed foam.
the oil from the carpet side was an easy match to get out, but the bottom part, all the foam is the problem.
as you cannot power wash it, as it will tear it appart, and it has sucked upp a lot of oil.
The back seat too offcourse a problem, as all the foam in the back seat has sucked in the oil.

we tried the back seat too with degreasers, left for hours, then rinse through with HOT water, it helps, and gets some out, but it seams all will not come out..

Any ideas CONCOURS GARAGE?, as I know you are the specialist in this area..

<HTML>As i cannot edit (we really need that feature here), i will add also
that the rest of the car now, with everything taken out (concours liking it allready), we have offcourse first thourouly cleaned the inside, then both smoke odor treated it, and ozone treated the cabin, which now is perfect, and has no more smell of oil...at all
now we just need the rest to be that way too.
i have allready spent a good 8 hours on it,, but i just need to get it perfect, there must be a way..

<HTML>I am laughing and salivating at this...boy do I love this kind of work...

Bear in mind I am not there to smell and to see the substrates you are working with but my based on your description would suggest that you do the following since the peices are probably smelling like rancid oil.

Seperate the seat covers from the seat cushions (if the seat covers are the Alcantara fabric which is a suede like finish you cannot use hot water because it will stretch it out. In an case if the seat covers are black you will have to be careful not to fade the color out.

Mix hot water with dishwashing soap and some regular soap for washing clothes, submerge the sponges in a LARGE container with the mixture, leave for 1 hour intervals remove and place between two large peices of plywood and have to heavy guys walk on it and squeeze the water out.. what will happen is you will keep degreasing the sponge after while keep soaking in plain water and press the water out and keep in the sun or blowers blowing 24 hours a day until the dry out.

You will have do do the same with the seat covers soak and rinse.

You will have to replace the thin fiber glass padding...try an upholstery shop or dealer for the part. Soak the carpet in a large container of the same mixture and again place between large peices of plywood and press water out. Since you can't preassure wash the sponge peice preassure wash the carpet side and keep the hose with running water on the sponge side and at intervals press out the water on a board. Hang on a scaffolding sponge side up in the sun to dry or run blowers 24 hours per day it can take days and weeks.

If you still smell an oily smell you will need to also use an odor eliminator to help but the scent from the soap will remove the smell.</HTML>

<HTML>Thank you Concours

I knew ya couldnt resist when i laid the bait of a new oily smelly car out..LOL..LOL..lOL.

Thank you a thousand times for the info, i can use it, and i will.

The only problem i have are the two big fixed carpets as they are about 5x7ft each one
the carpet fiberglass middle, and foam, are all one piece molded togheter. into the shape to fit into the car over bumps corners middle console, and pedals.
as i said the carpet top side was no problem, but because of the fiber middle, no pressure goes through that way from above spraying on carpet side.
so i guesse ill have to buy some kinda big tub that will fit the two, (well one at a time) floor carpets,, and then use the rest of your idea,, i like the two big guys on a board,, lucky for me i have two big guys,, but no board yet.

thanks again

<HTML>another edit post

at least here in Spain on the coast we are still in the high 80+ degrees daytime, with a HOT sun, so the drying is no big problem .

Just one more question, why use dishwashing soap, in comparison to car shampoo for example. or degreasers.

and if its better, then , will FAIRY do the job???
or do you prefer any other make??.

by the way the upholstery is normal black synthetic stuff..
have seen no problem in fadin, in the times we´ve tried allready,, seems a good quality..
(maybe something showing through that mercedes actually make the SMART)

<HTML>You can roll up the carpet like a cigar and place in a 55 gallon drum.. In this case just insert a water heater to heat up the water. I use the diswashing soap because it is an expensive degreaser specifically formulated to remove grease from pots and pans and it has always worked for me and it will not remove or lighten the color in the fabric.....you could use another degreaser if you wish, try a restaurant supply store.

Is it possible for you to use a razor and cut away the sponge from the center where it is molded? In other words slice through the sponge up to the back of the carpet and gently shave it away from the carpet. You could treat it seperately and either reuse or re-fabricate the piece with jute.</HTML>
