Compounds and Grit

<HTML>I have been thinking about this, but have been to tired to post this question. How do you know the grit number on compounds that dont label it. Meguairs has diamond cut which is their most abrasive comound available, Bud has 800 grit comound which is Detail Plus' most aggressive. How do you know how aggressive comounds are that arent labeled in grit counts. After trying Auto Magic XP comound the other day, Im starting to think their are better comounds out their than what meguars has, it seems to not have enough aggression even though they say its the most aggressive one they have.

Is the aggressivness of a comound always determined with grit count whether the manufacture labels it as so or not? Thanks guys!!!!</HTML>

<HTML>Dan:

The reason chemical companies do not label their compounds by grit size is that they want the detailer to believe their products are "special."

There is a fear in the chemical business that detailers will discover that chemicals are really nothing but a commodity. That is, you compare apples to apples and you have the same thing. Just like lumber; grass seed; sugar, etc.

The reason we do it is because we believe it to be the easiest way for detailers to understand the differences between compounds, just like sandpaper.

Even at that there are differences in compounds. Some work fast, using less oil and a mineral spirits fast dry solvent. Others, like ours, for example, have work longer to prevent damage to the finish as they have more oil and use a slower drying solvent.

It really takes work to determine what is the best product to use.

The Comparison Test of Waxes and Sealants is probably one of the first objective comparisons you can use to see how the wax or sealant you might be using matches up against others. One of Meguiar's products was last on the reflective gloss list.
