Racoon and Mouse on carpet

All,

I don't consider myself a pro but I have done this for awhile. However, I was hit with something I have not seen. A bassboat that was loaded with coon poop and a horrible smell of urine from what I gather were mice. I did a normal shampoo on the carpet but to no avail. Any advice? This carpet smells horrible!

Thanks all and have a great summer

"I don't consider myself a pro but I have done this for awhile."

I am assuming the above statement means you have been engaged in cleaning/detailing at some level on a consistent basis for some time.

I would suggest that if are engaged in this business you might want to spend some time on education or learning more about the business cleaning and how it impacts your health. It is not my intent to be unkind or to chastise you...but you exposed yourself to a very dangerous environment and you are not even aware of it...which is all the more reason you need to improve upon your education.

RACOONS

ARE CARRIERS OF SOME VERY DANGEROUS AND COMMUNICABLE DISEASES NOTABLE ROUND WORRM

RATS
ARE CARRIERS OF HANTA VIRUS

PPE (PERSONAL PROTECTIVE EQUIPMENT,..EYEWARE, GLOVES, MASKS/RESPIRATORS

"If people are exposed to the worms, it can cause a syndrome called "larval migrans" in which a larval stage of the parasite migrates into tissues and organs of the person causing tissue damage, necrosis and inflammation. Visceral larval migrans (VLM) refers to migration to the internal organs, neural larval migrans (NLM), to the nervous system and ocular larval migrans (OLM) refers to the eye. Roundworms (Toxacara canis or cati) can cause VLM or OLM and rarely NLM. Blindness, liver and lung damage are seen. Roundworms eggs, (which are microscopic) are usually accidentally ingested and develop in a person's intestine before migrating to other tissue. The exact symptoms of the disease are dependent on the path of the parasite. Children are much more susceptible to the disease.

Hookworms (Ancyostoma cannium) most often cause cutaneous larval migrans (CLM). Persons, often times children, are exposed to the larval forms in the soil or sand and the larvae penetrate the skin and migrate thought the tissue, causing damage.

Tapeworms can occasionally be ingested by people and can cause digestive upset, and people can shed the tape worm segments in their feces if infected. A rarer tapeworm (echinococcis) can cause internal cysts, sometimes in the liver or lungs.

The raccoon carries a round worm called Baylisascaris causes NLM and is highly fatal. The infection has been seen in children and young adults who were exposed to raccoon feces. It is thought that the prevalence of the parasite in raccoons is very high so it is important to exercise caution around raccoons or their feces"

Raccoon Roundworm disease hits Brooklyn teen and baby

Fewer than 30 cases of Raccoon Roundworm have been reported nationwide.
A rare, deadly disease that has left an infant brain damaged and a teenager blind in one eye, has been detected in Brooklyn, the Daily News has learned.
The city's Department of Health is on alert for Raccoon Roundworm, a disease contracted through contact with raccoon feces. It can cause permanent nerve damage and death. The disease had previously been incorrectly called Raccoon Ringworm.
"Parents should closely supervise small children in areas where raccoons live to prevent possible ingestion of raccoon feces," said Sally Slavinski, of a Health Department unit that deals with diseases that can be transmitted between animals and humans.
In the first case, a healthy infant who traveled to upstate New York last year started having seizures and spinal problems last October. The baby has been brain-damaged and hospitalized ever since.
Then, in January, a Brooklyn teen who hasn't left the city recently, lost sight in the right eye.
Fewer than 30 cases of Raccoon Roundworm have been reported nationwide. It takes two to four weeks for symptoms, which include nausea, loss of coordination and muscle control, and blindness, to develop.
News of the disease, which strikes mostly kids and especially developmentally disabled children, sent shivers through city playgrounds.
"It's terrifying. God only knows how I would react if my kids became that ill," said Bay Ridge mom of two, Angelia Kane, 38.
"The concern for me would be kids being kids. I have a 3-year-old girl and a 6-year-old boy. When they're slightly out of sight, they're going to pick up something in the course of their normal behavior and put their filthy hands in their mouths."
With the swine flu outbreak, Kane's kids have been washing their hands more often, but she said she won't keep them from going to the playground.
"If you spend enough time reading about all the things kids can contract you don't leave the house," she said.
Still, Slavinski said parents should take other precautions.
"Raccoon feces should be removed using gloves and disposable bags, and placed in trash to keep from children," she said.
