Engine

I'm the proud owner of a semi-basket case 68 GTO convertible. It needs pretty much everything. Wrong engine, its got a 455 w/auto. Should be a 400/4 speed. PHS says engine code was WT. Different sources quote different HP ratings. For 68, is the WT block a 350 or 360HP? How can I identify the correct block if I find one?

I believe the '68 400 with WT code was 350 hp. The casting number should be #9790071 or for a '68 Ram Air 400 the number is #9792506. The casting number on mid 1967 and later engines is located just behind the #8 cylinder on the passenger side of the block. If you go to Year One's website and pull up "Block Identification" for Pontiac it will give you lots of info with pictures and numbers for identifying the different engines.
