66, the year the car was built. I.E. 1966
400, the size of the engine.

Oh and in case you didn't already know. The 66 and 67 are pretty much the same car, with a few minor differences. Actually the 66 was the highest production year for the GTO. Nice car for sure. Plus if the car is in decent restorable condition, and complete, that price is very reasonable. Good luck!

The difference between the 66 and 67 cosmeticlly is: The grills are blacked out on a 66 while the 67 has a crome mesh over them, the 6.5 litre emblem is on the fender on the 66 and on the rocker on the 67, bigger rocker mouldings on a 67, the tailights are completly different, the 66 has louvers over the tailights while the 67 is cleaner looking,

Drive train wise: 67 was the first year offered with the turbo hydramatic 400 with the dual gate shifter
the 389 and the tri power were dropped in favor of a 400 bore motor and a rochestor 4 barrel quadrajet

basicly the cars are the same and most of the parts are interchangable. Good luck with your hunt for a 67, there a great car and i love the one i have.
