Gas Tank Straps

Hello to the Group,
My name is Paul and I have a 66 GTO Conv. I am resuming a restoration that had been put on hold for the past 11 years. I have some questions regarding an install of a new gas tank and would hope someone in the Group could help.
1) Should the support straps have some kind of insulator to eliminate the metal to metal contact with the tank?
2)Is there a particular way that the tank pad should be positioned between the tank and under body? (ie: favor it toward the filler end or the sender end)
Your responses will be much appreciated.
Paul

Paul,
I recently dropped the gas tank on my 67 Tempest and there was a rubber material between the straps and the tank. It looks and feels like the rubber that is used for a bicycle inner tube. The rubber is about 2 and a half inches wide with 1 fold so it stuck out from either side of the straps by about a quarter of an inch. The edges were tattered so I am going to buy a bicycle inner tube, cut it to length, and install it when I reinstall the tank. As for the tank mat, I will be repositioning it so it is centered on the tank, so that all the high spots of the tank are cushioned with the mat.
I don't know if this "inner tube" material is original, but it will certainly stop any vibration. I hope this helps
Good luck with your project.
