I think general convention is that the back and forth motion be along the front-rear axis - not left to right. why? General wisdom is that any microscratches that "might" be left/caused/whatevered are along your visual axis - hence not readily visible from within the car. From time to time I notice cars around that have vertical scratches on their wind-down windows - usually the drivers side. The pro's use a compound called "CERIUM OXIDE" its great for light marks as you described. As a guide, if you can feel the scratch when you run a fingernail across it - you will be pushing uphill to remove it. Scratches you cant feel that way will come out with patience. There is a product from Sonax called "PlasticRestorer" that I have found invaluable for keeping a neat finish on hard plastic. It comes in 2 shades of grey and a black. It applies like those instant shoe polish products (Tube with a sponge applicator).
