From memory the pump only runs when it has somewhere to pump ie thereis no return line . A stuck float or needle simply lets the pump run on. I have recently totally recond the hydraulics sytem of the clutch - new slave new master etc. It works fine when i first drive it. After about 20 mins generally whe driving through the dales I go to change gears and the pedal literally falls to the floor, On releasing it and depressing I get a normal full pedal on the first or second pump.
