Original matching color, opinions?

I noticed you post and am curious what opinions I can find about a E Type having the original color. I have a 63 coupe that had a complete color change early in its life, not sure why but I assume the owner liked BRG better than opalescent Yellow which I also prefer. Interior was changed to black as well. Never even noticed that the original color had been changed back in 1980 when the car was purchased, was only 20 years ago that I became aware that there was a color change when the complete drive train, rear cradle, suspension and front clip was removed to do a engine refresh and to prep the car for a fresh paint job as the color was fading, chipped, and started to have spider cracks so was checking the paint codes which did not match. I .
Due to moving, being busy and having other cars to work on the car was only recently put back on the road and unfortunately had the hood off all those years and it got a dent and some scratches.
I decided to changed the interior back to Tan which was the original color and give the whole car a fresh respray since it sat for the last 15 years in the garage and was damaged.
With the recent increase pries of E types I am questioning my decision to repaint the car in BRG because if how some seem to value everything matching the factory spec. I do not intend to show the car, sell and I don't really care at this point if the color matched the factory codes but I do wonder what others who may know more about selling a matching numbers car that has not been molested other than a color change feel.
Is there that much value added by restoring the car with the proper color that it left the factory with.
Personally I don't care if the colors matches the original since its being repainted and was not bought as a collector car. I only care that the paint job was done properly and does not have traces of older paint or colors showing.
The color changes was done complete when ever it was done, had a hard time finding any traces of the paint that it was suppose to have and can't even say 100% for sure it was yellow originally. The original owner can't be found but I have the registration but the car was bought in California and they didn't show the color on the registration.
In the end I will stay with BRG but perhaps if I were to ever sell the car would it be worth the effort and cost to return it to match whats the codes are on the door tag?

Re: E-Type engine feels lumpy

If the problem is not something obvious such as a loose plug wire, fouled distributor rotor, bad spark plug, or sticking carb float, then the camshaft timing sprocket may have slipped.

In late 1969 and early 1970, Jaguar fitted a "new and improved" timing sprocket adjusting plate to the XK engine, referred to as "cruciform", which had four projections with fewer teeth to grip the inside of the sprocket rather than the previous adjusting plate’s 360° of teeth. But the “cruciform" adjuster plate was found to occasionally slip and cause timing problems (at the best) or the valves would hit the piston crowns (at the worst).

Remove the cam covers, unbolt the adjusting plates from the sprockets, slide forward, and examine the backside of the sprocket adjusting plates to determine whether they are “cruciform” and which may have rounded off the gripping teeth.

Replace the “cruciform” adjusting plate with a 360° toothed adjusting plate (part # C30767) if you can find them. Otherwise, replace with the “new” camshaft sprockets with slotted bolt holes for making the timing adjustments (part # NBB2549AA used on 3.6 and 4.0L AJ6 engines from 1988 on) which are also becoming more scarce.

The “new” sprocket also uses a different flanged head bolt (part # JZS100082) measuring 3/8” x 24 fine thread x 5/8” length which grips the sprocket face in a way that a regular cap head bolt will not. These bolts are also getting difficult to find, but an alternate can be ordered from Fastenal (part # 0148165) which will be ¾” long. Grind off the extra 1/8” to so that it will not protrude from the back of the sprocket and grind against the cam bearing cap.

Hi - I'm new to this forum and have a question I'm hoping someone can help me with. I was recently fortunate enough to purchase a drivers side door (complete, in good condition) from, I believe, an early E-type. I'd like to know what years this door (and door/window pieces) would fit and be correct for. It has the hinge, window, window frame, regulator, inner door and window crank, outside door handle, and inner door panel. The inner door panel is shot, everything else pretty good.. Originally blue/green, repainted black. Any help would be much appreciated, thank you.

DMT:

All other things being equal, an automatic will cost less than a four speed in the vintage of cars we are talking about here.

A/C affects performance mostly with the fact that the added weight will slow you down. As a percentage it isn't significant, so if you want comfort and live in an area where it would be often needed, go for it. The E-Type is not a lightweight race car, so IMHO, A/C is appropriate.

Replacement parts are reasonably EZ to find, but the quality ones are not cheap.

Any documentation is helpful. If you have it all going back to the original purchase, that would be great. Service records are critical here, the more the better as it can tell you a lot about your car.

Try reading my article at my article at [web-cars.com] It's geared towards Corvette purchasers, but much of the info applies. There is also [www.xkedata.com] and [www.jag-lovers.org]

The good news is that I am in the market to buy an Jaguar XK-E Series III roadster. The bad news is that I haven't found the right one one yet.

I know a four speed is ideal for some but for practical reasons, it seems the automatic is what I am looking for this time around. Does the choice effect purchase price?

For creature comfort, air conditioning is another option I'm hoping to find in the same vehicle. Does the choice have any drawbacks on performance?

Is there a source that lists original interior colour options (e.g., biscuit) and exterior colour options (e.g. Regency red)?

As far as restoration, are replacements parts easily found (e.g., convertible top, seat kits)?

Lastly, if one were to buy a vehicle in excellent condition and price, what kind of paper trail/records are key to establishing value (given Carfaxing, I've been told, is not available on vehicles as old as these)?

Thanks in advance for any thoughts shared.

The E-type was supposed to be the replacement for the D-type for racing. The "XK" (120-140-150) designation was the road-going sports model. But the E-type was so well received by the press and public that it was decided to make a road version. The E-type became known in the U.S. as the "XKE" to ride the popularity of the preceeding XK models. And soon there may be the Jaguar F-type ... back to the "type"s roots as a 2-seater sports car instead of the grand touring route that the models took in 1972 when the E-types were long wheelbase 2+2's. BTW, Alfa Romeo used the terms "Corsa" and "Strada" to differentiate their racing models from the road going base car equivalent.

"Type", "Model, "Job", etc. were popular model progression designations in earlier times. Remember the Buick Y-Job, Ford Model A? But were there ever any Jaguar A- or B-types?

E Type Hood (Bonnet) Release

I am considering the purchase of a '71 E Type. Unfortunately the car's owner is away working in Alberta (about 2,000 miles from the car), and his wife doesn't know how to open the hood (bonnet). I found the two chrome release handles on the door posts, but couldn't figure out how to release the centre catch.

Can anyone out there help this feeble minded fool overcome the problem?

Thanks in advance.

Hi I am new to the board and have been restoring a 66 E-type oradsster for the last 2 years. I finally got the engine in and started it. There appears to be a crack in the block on the right side to the right of the jaguar insignia. Is it possible to fix this or does the block have to be junked. Any chance of fixing it without removing engine. thanks for any advice.

I have now fitted the SNG barratt HE amplifier and distributor, and it has fixed all my problems.
The car now starts really well even when hot. There is no hint of a miss right up to near the red line.
I have done around 500 miles on it so far.

Anyone who can use a spanner and screwdriver can fit this themselves. Barratts supply a comprehensive, including photos, installation manual.

One of the best things about the barratt amplifier is that it uses a bog standard Gm part for the amplifier. I bought a spare through Amazon for around $40. It will be a simple unplug and refit if required.

One thing to note is that you must supply your old amplifier and distributor to barratts or pay a higher price. Barratts told me this was due to a shortage of original amp casings, and distributor bodies.

Hello,
I am looking for a good service manual for my 1979 Jaguar Type E 2+2. One site seems to provide a reasonable download (http://www.jaguarrepairmanual.com/jaguar-e-type-3.8-4.2.php). I just want to make sure that there is solid information on dashboard instruments and how to un-mount and remount. Thanks for any help.

Hello,
The black plastic like material on my 1970 2+2 Jaguar E dashboard was in too bad condition, so I decided to remove it and replace it with simili leather. I have a problem with dismounting the front panel: there are 2 turning knobs for air control which I am unable to remove. Any advise?
I also need to buy the right glue. I live in Palms Springs and during summer the temperature in the garage easily reaches 100 deg F. I thus need a glue which will be heat resistant. Any advise?
Thanks in advance for your help.
