Testing & Experimenting

We are all here pretty much for the same reason...to make our own or our customer's cars the best they can be. Those of us that know, give our information and experience freely, and sometimes we learn something new.

We are flooded with ideas and suggestions on how to do everything from the simplest wash, to the most involved Concours detailing. How do we find out what works and what doesn't? Testing and experimentation.

But who of us is really willing to risk our own or worse a customer's car to an unknown process? I recently gave a suggestion for using Castrol and OxiClean. One man was willing to give it a try, and fortunately for him, my info was legit, and the results were everything he hoped for.

This brings us again to: "How do we test these new/different ideas without risking our or a customer's car?" The answer is simple, easy, obvious, and right under our noses... We ALL know someone who's car gets washed when it rains & the interior is cleaned when both dors are open and there is a cross breeze. Some of us in the northern states even have 'winter beater' cars who's only function in life is to let the 'good' car rest in the garage in the winter. These cars offer near perfect opportunities to test new products and ideas.

After all, once summer comes, the winter beater is sold off, if it is damaged, who cares, it has served it's function. The slovenly friend, I'm sure will rarely mind "donating" his/her car to the cause...after all, they are getting a "free" detailing.

Offer the friend a free interior cleaning, the set in and wildly various stains inside the car will give you an ample 'test bed' for cleaning products and methods.

I go to the junk yard and experiment on trunks and hoods. thats the best way to "try" things.
