The S2 2+2 engine numbers ran as follows 1R40001 - 1R44287: As Paul says it should be at the front of the cylinder head. For more info on car numbers check out www.xkedata.com under resources. Dave 876160by Dave K - Jaguar E-Type Forum
Alex, Depending on the series of your car there is plenty of literature describing the spec of your car, Haddock for one if you can afford to buy it, I have locked mine in a safe:-)You can enter your car details on www.xkedata.com there is a wealth of info on the site and you will be joining the 8300 other E-types there already. The oil at the rear of the engine may not have come from the seal but from the two cam oil feeds, this is a popular place for leaks. In any case an oil leak is no real reason not purchase the car, rust is though!! Daveby Dave K - Jaguar E-Type Forum
Hi Dom, The cubic inch of the engine should 4.2 as long as it hasn't been lumped or messed with. It should be marked somewhere on the block. I don't know where you are based but the horsepower was reduced because of the emission control equipment fitted to the USA cars. Originally Jaguar claimed 265 bhp but most feel this was a bit optimistic and was near 220bhp. Dave '61 OTSby Dave Kerr - Jaguar E-Type Forum
Michel, Try www.jag-lovers.org then click forums you should find what you are looking for there. You will have to register before you can use the site. I use the E-type forum regularly. Daveby Dave Kerr - Jaguar E-Type Forum
Roger, I would be taking it back to whomever rebuilt it. I think there should be around 5 to 10 thou backlash, it certainly shouldn't be clunking. Daveby Dave Kerr - Jaguar E-Type Forum
Roger, Have you checked your universal joints on the prop shaft, also check your drive shaft U/J's. Daveby Dave Kerr - Jaguar E-Type Forum
Jon, Talking to some E-type owners in the States this is what they have to say: It sounds like an early 67 car like mine. Completely S1 except for S1.5 open headlight bonnet, not S2 as they suppose. As for the value that's a total wild card. If ALL the bits are there just those may be worth $4k-6k thinking of the value of just the parts. Problem is I can't imagine why the car woulby Dave Kerr - Jaguar E-Type Forum
Jon, Last question-where are you, prices vary from country to country. Daveby Dave Kerr - Jaguar E-Type Forum
Jon, More info required, you say its a 67.5 E-type do you mean its a 67 ? is it a convertible or fixed head car. Although all the parts are there its not normally just a straight forward rebuild, parts will need overhauling and believe me the cost will mount up. You could try the JCNA they have a price guide. Rod is correct here, the manifold is different and the oil damper top is longer, this causes them to hit the bonnet, there are some other differeces as well. This has been discussed on J-L it is a lot of hassle to get right. You would be better to get the correct ones from Burlen or check ebay UK and USA as they come every now and again. Daveby Dave Kerr - Jaguar E-Type Forum
Paul, straight forward job but as Jeff says try to tie it in with an overhaul of the IRS at the same time. Daveby Dave Kerr - Jaguar E-Type Forum
Paul, As far as i can find out no badges on the bonnet, the gear knob should be black with the gearbox legends scribed in and carb intake scoop should be silver. I got this info from Original Jaguar E-Type by Philip Porter. Daveby Dave Kerr - Jaguar E-Type Forum
Philip Porters book is full of inaccuracies which he admits himself, it never shows the exact part you want and is just a glossary of the cars. I have a '61 ots and have found the original parts book to be a a big help along with Thomas haddocks 6 & 12 cylinder restoration guide to be about the best available. Mark, I know the type of component you mean for tightening the wheels. I have never used one myself but have heard they are OK for occasional use and then they seem the splinter and fall apart. The problem is if you use a hammer to tighten them I.E. give them a good whacking on the end of the spanner to ensure the spinner is tight. I know a lot of people would be interested in a good method of uby Dave Kerr - Jaguar E-Type Forum
Richard, Not sure if you are being serious here but just in case the strip of numbers with probably a few letters there as well is the ......number plate or license plate if you are in the States, this number at the front matches surpisingly the number at the back of the car. Marco, As I know you from the JEC website there is no need to tell you about that site, it is low volume so you may have to wait days for a reply. You could try these sites www.jdc-etype@yahoogroups.com once you have registered it is an email based site. Postby Dave Kerr - Jaguar E-Type Forum
Helen, Try going to www.xkedata.com type in the chassis number and see if its there. If it is then these should be some info about it. If its not there and you know the vin then enter the data if you wouldn't mind. Dave '61 otsby Dave Kerr - Jaguar E-Type Forum
Mike, You can try various methods, in the States you can buy Wilwoods a four pot caliper with the same brake area as the standard Dunlop brakes but less brake fade. You keep all your brake system and just bolt the Wilwoods stright on. In the UK we have Coopercraft and Zeus same type of thing. I have upgraded my '61 3.8 with Volvo Girling calipers about a quarter of the price of all the restby Dave Kerr - Jaguar E-Type Forum
