Any opinion on washing your car polishing cloths with fabric softner ? Does this help or hurt ?

Fabric softener actually REDUCES that absorbancy of towels. It also has micro crystals that can collect or clump in cloth and pose a scratch risk (on glass, it can cause smearing).

It DOES sound like an oxy-moron. But good quality towels usually stay soft, and it's not so much the 'stiffness' of the towel that causes scratches, it's the crystaline components of the fabric softener.

If you're just u sing the towels for drying the car after washing, I would recommend getting a good synthetic chamois. Thjey don't scratch.
