Used 3M General Purpose Adhesive Remover, let it soak on paint and back plastic trim for about 5 minutes, the scraped off big chinks with plastic razor blade , then rubbed with rag soaked in 3M GPAR . Scraped off the paint in the wheel welss with a razor blade. Trim coated with Revive by Car Brite.

<HTML>Very nice!!!! That was one nasty mess!!! Did you find out if the owner had filed an insurance claim against the company that did the painting. If it was insurance work, you could've doubled your bill and been paid with no problem. Especially if the owner took the car to a body shop and they wrote an estimate for $1,500 + to repaint and blend that whole side of the car. Adjusters love it when they get a bill for something like this and it's only $500-$750. They pay it without even thinking twice!!! I know, because that's what I did with claims like this. Not to mention the savings on rental car costs. If I pay the $750, I just saved my company over $1,000!!!</HTML>

<HTML>Speaking of insurance, how does a shop owner go by getting the insurance company to pay them for a job? Say a customer comes to me with 2 bulls-eyes in the winshield and I charge them $150 for the fix. I hear the insurance will pay this even without a deductible. Do I get paid by the customer and let the customer make the claim? Or would I contact their insurance company?</HTML>

<HTML>I have no idea Rod, I dont think so , they are a regular customer at the dealership and just asked if we could try and get it offf. They actually came in for an oil change and tire rotation ! I kow we charged them about 2 and a half hours labor for the paint removal , as thats about how long it took me . The pictures above only show the front, the paint was pretty much like that all the way along one side of the vehicle . The customer was happy though, and I was happy with the end resullt. When it came in , I just stood there and shook my head, wondering how the hell I was going to get it off. Was well pleased with the end result .

Heres another before pic . It was like this all the way down to the rear bumper.

<HTML>WOW!!!! Again, Jim. That was one big, nasty ol' mess!!! Very nice work. I'll definitely keep that adhesive remover in mind because there's an awful lot of road construction here in Michigan and I'd bet my last dollar that once I open my shop, I'll be seeing some of this.

As far as the insurance, I was just thinking out loud. You did the right thing by your customer. Most people don't even want to get their insurance involved and will just eat the cost if it's reasonable. I know I have!!

Brian...based on my experience in insurance, in order to be able to bill the carrier directly, you have to get on their approved list of w/s repair facilities. Most carriers have so many now and most glass shops are approved, so I don't even know if it would be worth it at this point. I've heard there's quite a bit of red tape to go through.

The way around that though is to find out if the customer has reported the dmg to his carrier. If so, then call the adjuster & tell him you've got the car right there in the shop to work on & ask for approval to send the bill to the adjuster. They always say yes. That way, you avoid the approval hassles and you don't get a bunch of people coming to you for chip repair referred by the insurance carrier.

Of course, you can tell your customer that his carrier will reimburse him for the repairs and waive his deductible if he reports the claim and sends them your bill. That way, you've already got your money, have passed along a money-saving tip to your customer and are out of the loop altogether. I think this is the best way if you're doing chip repair as an add-on service for your customers and not using it as a full-time profit center.</HTML>
