New paint advise
November 23, 2003 07:59PM
<HTML>Hello I have a question about new paint.

I just finished restoring a 56 chevy truck the last step was paint. It came out perfect. The painter told me no wax or car cover for 6 months. It has 2 base coats and 3 clears(black) ppg. It has been sitting for 3 months now. My question is what are the proper procedures for a new paint job like this. I want to know the best possilbe care, so i can sort through car detailer's in my area to figure out who know what they are doing and whos just guessing. i would hate to have paid for all that block sanding to get the surface looking mirror just for some knckle head to put swirls in it. If anyone can recomend someone in So ca that would help.

Thanks for the help guys - Jay -</HTML>

<HTML>When a vehicle is paint as yours you have to wait only 60 days for the solvents in the paint to evaporate before sealing or waxing the paint. To do so before that will trap the solvents which can cause numerous problems.

As for the car cover, I am not certain how long you have to wait. You can compound and cut a new paint job right after cool down. And, you can polish and swirl remove from 18 to 24 hours after painting.

So, I do not know about a car cover. I think he was just telling you this to be safe. Unless you use an expensive car cover you could scratch the paint I would guess putting it on and taking it off.

What you need to do now is seal the paint for protection. I would put on a good paint sealant for durability. We have a Comparative Test of 25 of the most commonly used paint sealants and waxes used by detailers which will tell you which give the best shine and which give the best durability. You can get a copy sent to you for $7.95 contact me directly about this.

If this is to be a show type vehicle that you do not drive or only drive periodically I would then keep a coat of thicker wax on the car over the sealant. The oily, thicker wax will provide a barrier that will prevent, to some degree, scratching.

When you wash the car use only a new sponge or mitt or you will scratch the paint. An older mitt or sponge will have small grit in it.

Wash off all the dust; dirt and grit with a high pressure washer or garden hose with a small nozzle that gives you pressure.

Then put a good low alkaline carwash shampoo in a clean 5 gallon bucket and fill with warm water. With your mitt/sponge dip and have the garden hose in one hand and the mitt in the other and begin to wash from the front end (drivers side). When you finish the hood dip again in the bucket and wash the windshield or the front fender and then dip again on the next are.

The water and shampoo in the mitt/sponge plus the running water from the hose while washing keep a barrier between the mitt/sponge and the paint while you are washing. It should help reduce the spider scratching.

You can also re-wax the car often to fill the spider scratches.

That should do it ok for you.

<HTML>Jay, Your truck sounds like it should be beautiful. You Lucky Guy!!!!!! Like Bud I have a few questions before I can give any really good advice. Is this just a show truck, seldom if ever driven or do you intend on driving in only perfect weather occasionally or every day (show off.....just kidding)????? Is it going to be garaged or are you depending on a cover for protection???? Black paint is very soft and seems to take forever to dry even on new vehicles. Right now I have to agree with your painter and say wait 6 months prior to any sealants or wax. If I were you I would go back to whomever painted it and ask about putting a glaze(allows paint to continue to breath while still giving some protection) on the truck for now. You may even consider going to another specialist paint shop and ask what they suggest(second opinion to be sure!!!) From my experience I certainly would do nothing but a glaze for the first six months but I am concerned about where and how it is stored when not in use. The washing suggestions given by Bud were perfect.......just be very, very careful!!!! Again congratulations on what I bet is a beautiful truck and I bet you are very, very proud....as you should be. Let me know about the storage situation and what your second opinion develops and hopefully you can keep it beautiful forever!!!!! Take care and have a great day, Ron</HTML>
