can a female be taken seriously at detailing?

<HTML> I have been a finatic about cleaning the cars here at home for a few years. I like taking a car and making it spotless. I ended up with an industrial type of steam cleaner , and did homes. I realized I had a great machine for doing cars. The end is removable and has a long hose to get in small places. I bought a cleaner at one of the fairs, and it worked really good. I since can not get it anymore, the old people that had the stand at our fair retired............have to find a new product I guess. I have been thinking that since I have a covored area to do this in, could I possibly do this as a side job? Seriously would most men bring a vehicle to a woman to be cleaned? I am fussy about how I clean them, I even use a tooth brush on every thing on the dash to make sure it is spotless. The only thing I wouldn't know the "best " products out there for the exterior. Are there many places that offer a class? I also have never had too much luck with the cans of spray on cleaner that evaporate. Do clients expect you to use them, because the way I do it the seats and carpeting is slightly damp and has to sit for a few hours to dry.

Also what is required of a true detail.....And how long should it take?
wash
wax
vaccume
steam cleaning/
glass cleaning
tires cleaned/protective
chrome cleaned
am I missing anything</HTML>

<HTML>Nanci,
I have spoken with a few women who are fast on their feet and can really say the right things to a customer, better than some of us guys, and they were great detailers, and they were paid $500 plus per car!! All of your questions definetely have answers, unfortunately it all depends on the type of detailing you want to do, (high end retail, dealership hack jobs, or just plain car washing). I would check into a program such as detail king or speak with a detailer in your area if he/she is willing, and just try to get some help. I was lucky and had a detailer friend show me some very important things, plus Im too stupid to quit so a lot of my experience is from trial and error, and while I look back on it, wish I would have just paid for a program to learn faster. 8 hour jobs in my first year of business now take 2-3 hours, with perfect results!! Theres a lot to learn, but its not impossible for the average person. Good luck to you Nanci!</HTML>

<HTML>Dan,
I agree, and will add this, when ever I was setting up or doing changes for a large detailing operation, always had to hire a few women.

This was true at the Ford and Chrysler predelivery centers, AmericanAnglo Auctions and a few years back, when we set up Driver's Mart recon centers.

In our training course, we bring it to the attention of owners and supervisors attending, "hire women" to assure quality results.

Simple reason, they are "more detail" oriented, and are the best their are for interior work and final inspection.

Not that a woman is not capable of the wash or buffing process, just found women to be the one's who really looked at the work, and by having them at the final inspection, the "buffer" "primo's" knew that if they attempted any short cuts, the car was coming back to them, and re-do's were for free, no pay, they were paid once.

Like Homer Simpson says, "you want it done right or you want it done fast!"

<HTML>I agree with Ron and Dan. Most women have the more natural "attention for details" than men and make great detailers. We had a few at our dealership shops when I helped manage.

Take Gina (concoursgarage) on here -- she pretty much knows everything about detailing and is a smart business woman. She even taught us fellas on here about Alcantara fabric. If it wasn't for her, we would've probably botched some Mercedes interior jobs.

To answer your question, yes, women are taken seriously by men in this industry.</HTML>

<HTML>You will be taken “SERIOUSLY” only if you take this business seriously. Auto detailing is an unforgiving and uncompromising business…being a women has it is advantages and disadvantages….

It can open the door for you …but once open, you must be impeccable with your word and your standards. You must educate… yourself on every aspect of this industry…you must be knowledgeable… you must be informed…. Your must keep abreast of the industry.</HTML>

<HTML>“Seriously, would most men bring a vehicle to a woman to be cleaned?”

Only if they looked like Carmen Electra!

Actually, it sounds like your "green". It is going to take more than a covered area and your favorite can of country fair wax. First thing first, determine if there is a need for detailing in your area. Take business classes and detailing classes. Possibly get hired on at a local detail shop for some experience.</HTML>

<HTML>The dictionary defines “abreast” as keeping up to date –

"breast"
breast P Pronunciation Key (br st)
n.
1.
a. Either of two milk-secreting, glandular organs on the chest of a woman; the human mammary gland.
b. A corresponding organ in other mammals.
c. A corresponding rudimentary gland in the male.
2.
a. The superior ventral surface of the human body, extending from the neck to the abdomen.
b. A corresponding part in other animals.
3. The part of a garment that covers the chest.
4. The seat of affection and emotion: “Griefs of mine own lie heavy in my breast” (Shakespeare).
5. A source of nourishment.
6. Something likened to the human breast: the breast of a hill.
7. The face of a mine or tunnel.

Now I suppose of a female detailer was endowed with breasts and kept abreast of the industry she could do very well and create a disadvantage for you guys..uh? (lol)</HTML>

<HTML>Madam,

As we have discussed, many times, face to face, it is very hard for the average male, and their "ego's" to understand that this business is more than most of them may comprehend.

You stated it very well.

You presented this in a very intelligent, but with humor, manner.

The industry is much more complex than most in it, seem to realize.

YES she can! I know a young lady named Tonya who use to be on the forums, who can detail a car as good or better than some that are in business. She knows her stuff!

I would think women would have an advantage because of how unique they would be in the industry. This would be true in body shops, repair shops, tint shops, etc.

There is really no difference between men and women detailing cars. I have worked in the past in detail operations with other women and can say that we did quite satisfactory work.

Would not agree that women are more qualified than men to do interiors because we pay attention to "details" better than men. I know plenty of women who are slobs and conversely men who are meticulous

What it all boils down to is an individual's attitude and work ethic and that applies to men as well as women.

Nanci, far as setting up a detail business is concerned if you want to detail cars and know what you need to know about paint finishes; leathers, vinyls, the proper process of cleaning carpets, steam removal etc then you are one step in th right direction, that is KNOWLEDGE.

You then need all of the proper equipment, chemicals and supplies and have a process to following for each detailing job.

Now comes the difficult part. Seting up a business that does detailing. You need a location and some way to contain waste water as it is against the law to discharge waste water into the storm drain or on to the ground, you need a business license; you need liability insurance, you need a garage owner's insurance policy. You need to have money to advertise and promote the business.

What I would suggest is that you invest $50 to join the INTERNATIONAL DETAILING ASSOCIATION where you will meet many detailers who can help you start your business.

Well...even tho most of the females are nil when we speak about detailing , I think that as an exemption to the general rule, a female can do a great job detailing cars...but my question is WHY SHOULD SHE?.
What is the point in choosing such a job when there are lots of guys out there that can do it?
Why a woman should sit in such uncomfortable positions, use all that chemicals, destroy her beautiful hands and nails...what for? I understand detailing as part of a lets say summer time female job while in highschool ...but a life time career? And it is not about who is better qualified or not...it is a matter of loosing " feminity "...

Why?...if I would be from Africa my hands and nails would be safe with chemicals and sponges ?smiling smiley

My answer to this is ABSOLUTELY the best detailer HANDS DOWN I ever saw was a woman. I learned a lot of my tricks from her that eventually lead to me starting my very own business at 16 years old. I am now 18 and enjoying season number two of TOTAL success in a town of less than 1000 people. I couldn't have done it had I not worked with this woman at my previous job at a dealership. I actually even bought my first and current car from her. Women naturally tend to have a tremendous attention to detail and often a bit more of a "cleaning touch" than men.

Concoursgarage:

Going through web-cars today and noticed your response to Mac-Pro inquirying if they were from another country.

Aware that she has been ill, Mac-Pro might not have seen your post.

Mac-Pro is, in fact, a woman who, with her husband own the finest detail operation in the Mediterrean on the island of Cyprus.

She is the business side of the operation and her husband is the technician.

If you knew her you would understand why she asked the question, "why should she?"
I would suspect that she would be a "horrible" detailer.

A female taken seriously in detailing ??? Don't be ridiculous ! That is like asking if a black man can be elected president. Or if a draft-dodging pot smoker could be taken seriously enough to defeat a disabled vet ( Bob Dole ) for the Presidency.

Or if the Mayor of Washington D.C. could get caught smoking crack and still get elected to the City Council.

Or if they could show nakedness and use foul language on T.V. without losing the viewers.

Or if a congressman can be openly homosexual and openly socialist at the same time.

Never happen ! LOL

In good fun...
