OZONE INFORMATION

<HTML>Not to "kick a dead horse" as they say, but to provide more knowledge on the subject of ozone I have done some personal research on ozone and ozone generators and hope it will be of value to those of you on the forum.

Most of the comments on ozone dealt with the "health hazards of ozone."

What you have to understand, first and foremost, is that you do not breath ozone. So, during any ozone treatment, whether in automobiles, hotels, for fire restoration in homes and buildings a person should not be present or inside the area being treated.

There is an exception to this, and that is, if the ozone in controlled by sensors. Casinos all over the world use ozone injected right into the air conditioners to destroy smoke and smoke odors. If you have ever been to a casino in Las Vegas or Reno that has no smell of smoke when the gamblers are smoking chances are the casino is using controlled ozone, and you are, in fact, breathing it along with everyone else in the casino.

The key is that the ozone is being used properly with ozone sensors controlling the level.

FYI, ozone is also used to treat water. Many city water systems and most bottled water is treated with ozone. So, you even drink ozone too.

OSHA; NIOSH; the EPA and the FDA all set exposure limits to ozone. So, in response to the statements already made on the forum, these agencies whould not have the limits if the use of ozone was illegal.

Ozone is an oxidant and can destroy such things as leather, vinyl and rubber, but only if misused and for long periods of time.

However, the treatment time for ozone in automobile interiors is far from a long period of time. The typical treatment time for odors in automobiles is only 1 to 3 hours. Leather will typically not start to dry out until it has been exposed to ozone for 8 to 10 hours.

The point, ozone, like any of the chemicals we use in detailing must be used properly. Consider the danger of wheel acid, far more dangerous to the car and the human (fatal) than ozone, yet it is used with wild abandon in our industry with NO safety precautions.

How many use wheel acid wearing safety glasses; respirator; rubber gloves; long sleeved shirt, preferably waterproof and a water proof apron?

Even the consumer product Fabreze can be dangerous to the user if inhaled or ingested.

If you are going to use ozone in an automobile interior the process is simple: remove the source of odor where possible and clean and shampoo the interior. Then inject ozone into the vehicle interior either through the window with the generator outside the car, or set the generator inside the car, in both cases for a period of 1 to 3 hours.

After the odor is eliminated turn off the ozone generator and open the doors of the vehicle and ventilate the interior for a period of 30 minutes to 1 hour. Or, if the ozone generator you use has a timer set it from 1 to 3 hours and it will automatically shut-off. Then just open the doors and ventilate.

Here are some facts pertaining to ozone exposure limits set by OSHA; NIOSH; the EPA and FDA. The websites have numerous pages on ozone and if anyone wants the information they can find it all on these sites.

Keep in mind these exposure limits are for breathing ozone, and in our business no one should be breathing ozone in any case.

www.osha.gov

The OSHA (pel) permissable exposure limits/NIOSH (rel) relative exposure limits are 0.1 ppm - 8 hr/day, 40 hr/week.

OSHA/NIOSH (stel) short term exposure limits are 0.03 ppm - 15 min

The EPA: 0.12 ppm - 1 hour, 0.08 - 8 hours

The FDA: 0.05 ppm - 24 hours

Odor threshold is detectable in the 0.01 to 0.04 ppm range, and is treated as a material with adequate warning properties.

The effects of overexposure: irritation of the nose and throat and could cause shortness of breath and/or coughing, headaches, fatigue, drowiness and inflamation of the upper respiratory tract.

You should NEVER use an ozone generator in occupied areas unless carefully regulated by ozone senors, which I remind you are used in most casinos.

Ozone is an unstable gas and does decompose to oxygen within a few minutes to hours depending on the amount.

KNOWLEDGE is the key in any business and with regard to chemicals it is critical.

There has been a great deal of conversation and half-truths and misinformation about ozone when many on the forum do not really have all the knowledge they should have on the subject.

Let me ask you all about wheel acid. Do you know the dangers? Do you know the first aid precautions? Do you have the special ontiments necessary to treat HF burns? Is the supplier who sells you this deadly chemical given you all this information?

I am far more concerned about the negative effects of HF acid on the vehicle and the human than ozone.

Hope this helps those interested in having facts about ozone.

<HTML>Great post Bud, and I liked the way you exampled it to the use of acids in automotive clean up. I hope that this will answer a lot of questions or put to rest some of the "VOODOO" surrounding the use of Ozone Generators.

We used one on a Cab Over Kenworth the other day, that a driver went off of the road, and was in the cab dead for 4 days, before the Colorado State Police found him. The interior was stripped out completely, power washed the inside, and then we still had to Ozone before putting the interior back.

I tried all of the squeeze bottle stuff, and nothing finished killing the odor until we Ozoned it.

Luckily there was any blood,as the driver appeared to have had a Stroke/Heart Attack........................ Brandy !</HTML>

<HTML>Bud Abraham - Thanks for the info and your insights.

NOTE: I think that this forum was instigated for the exchange of information / ideas while leaving your ego at the door. With some recent posts it would seem the sponsor should enforce a minimum mental age before participation requirement</HTML>

<HTML>Jon:

Thank you for your post, I am glad you found the information of value. It was most interesting for me to research the subject of Ozone to disspel some of the myths and misinformation.

That is the problem with information, people have only a little and do not question beyond that.
