No! Clay is for bonded dirt and scum.

A clay bar is used to clean the clearcoat,so whatever you use for protection
will not trap bad things under it.Polishing is removing fine scratches prior to the wax or sealant being applied.

The way in which we teach detailers to deal with the paint finish is the following:

Correction of a Paint Finish Problem

This is usually done with a rotary buffer; cutting pad (several to choose from); and a compound (again several to choose from - heavy, medium, light, microfine)

Swirl Removing/Polishing

After the correcting process, you again use a rotary buffer; polishing pad and swirl-remover/polish to remove swirls caused by buffing and to polish the finish to a smooth finish.

Protecton

By hand, orbital or dual-action tool you apply a wax or paint sealant protection

The above assumes a paint finish that requires all three steps. If there is no correction needed you can use then polish and protect.

Or, in the case of a well maintained or newer car you can simply protect.
