GTO gears...question

Hello all...

I have a 1968 GTO with the rare 4.33:1 gear ratio. These would be fine if I wanted to drag race the car, but I don't. They are awful on the highway, with a top speed of only 89mph. I have a friend with a set of 3.55:1 gears from a 1966 GTO.

My question is: are they compatible? His engine is a 389cid and mine is the 400cid (I don't know if that matters or not) Would I just be able to drop them in without a new drive shaft or rear axle, etc.

Any info you can provide would be great.
