I have a 400 from a 68 GTO that I am planning on putting together for my 74 GTO. As I understand, it was rated at 350 HP stock. Does that sound right?

In addition to that I have what I have been told are RA heads. How can I tell? Also, what do I need to do to make them most effective with the 400? Is there a special intake and exhaust manifolds, or what?

Thanks for the help....and go easy on me...it's hard enough to get respect owning a 74 GTO!!! smiling smiley

68 ram air heads are casting number RA I #31/#37 9792700,RA II #R/96/A.9794040.
and are very rare these day's RAI are almost impossable to find they only made 183 RA I & II's in 68 over half are RA II's, IN 69 RAIII #48 9795043 ARIV #722, 9796721 #44 Tunnel Port,&=70 RAIII #12&13 9799496 #614 rd port RAIV 9799498 and they nead a RamAir manifold for the early RA1 andII i think that 69s are interchageable IF RA none RA I dont think will work... the long numbers are casting number's with casting codes dates on heads will also tell you.TravisWilliams@EdWilliamsMachine the pontiac guy 12 and 13 heads are easyly found but all these heads will cost you $$ so if you have a set keep them...

As to the HP rating the gross HP was rated at 350. Today all HP ratings are in net HP which is always lower. Gross HP is like it would read on a dyno. You should be able to find the RAM Air 3 heads fairly easy and they are a standard D port. Don't overlook a good pair of 1970 or earlier standard 400 heads or the early 70's 6X heads.
