I'm looking to purchase a 1966 GTO convertible. Can someone please tell me how I can make sure that this car is genuine GTO and not a LeMans?

Fax the vin number to www.phs.com (pontiac historical services). They will validate it that way. The only real way that I know of...

phs is the way to go if the car is the real deal, but beforehand hand you
should do some minor checking:

1. make sure the vin in the drivers side starts with the following:

2 42 67 6 (letter) 1#####

make sure the vin is secured with ROSETTE rivets. rivets should have
no rust.

look at the data plate located in the firewall

should have:
66 24267 (assembly plant, the first letter MUST match letter from vin)

make sure both tags look unadultered.

2. jot down all the info from the data plate and check this GTO sites:

[ultimategto.com]

3. get PHS documents to verify original options.

4. read all you can about NUMBER Matching and what does it mean.

5. ask a lot of questions on this board, also try

OK Again this is a 1966

The vin starts with

2 4 2 6 7 7 Z 1 etc , so there is a # 7 as the sixth digit not a 6, what does that mean?

the numbers check out for a 67 gto convertible. Additionaly, the '67 seems to have more value than a '66.

whats the condition of the car??

if considerable work is needed keep that in perspective. for example, come painting time (if needed) be prepared to hear $8,000 and up for a good
paint job. that'll will be in the low side with no body rot, major panel
damage and/or panel replacement work needed.

also, parts costs start adding mightly $$quickly.
