LONG SHOT! In search of a 1968 GTO Hardtop (VIN # 242378P174264)

Long shot here, I realize, but thought I would give it a shot. In search of a 1968 Pontiac GTO hardtop, owned by my family from about six months of age, until around 1982 when it was sold by my uncle. My deceased father was the second owner at/around six months, and he sold it to my uncle in the mid-to-late seventies. As memory serves us best, we were told that it possibly ended up in California (or somewhere near the west coast) around this time. The car was located in Troy Ohio when it was sold around '82. The car was red, with white 'guts', and it had a 400 with a four-speed.

The VIN number is 242378P174264. Any information leads will be greatly appreciated. A finders fee for the car, or it's whereabouts, in any condition would be gladly considered. Hopefully the current owner would consider selling the car at some point, and I am an immediate buyer for it, or down the road, whichever comes first. Thanks for any help anyone can happen to provide!!

Jeremy,
This might not be as much of a longshot as you think. As long as the car is titled or better yet registered, chances are that it is on record with the division of motor vehicles in that state. Got any law enforcement buddies that could do a DMV search for you? If not, Check with your local DMV, they may be able to do the search for a small fee. Some of the information is classified, so there may be a few stummbling blocks, but the info is there.
Good Luck
Brad

www.ustrace.com. If you have $45 per each state you want checked, it may turn up...
