66 gto rear questions

Have 1966 lemans. Cloned to GTO. Running a 1966 389 4 bl. with th400 and need to convert to posi (355), Can I keep the lemans rear and housing and install a new posi unit..or should I just try to find an entire rearend that came with the posi? PS The lemans was a 6 cln OHC. Have no idea what rear is in their now.

The housing in the lemans must be a 3.08 or lower gear wise to fit.

which gears do you have now?

if this is the standard 8.2" B.O.P. rear then the housing should not matter. BUT- there are 2 carriers for these, if i remember right-the big one is for 3.32 and larger ratio's(3.55, 4.10 etc). the small one is for those smaller than that (3.23, 3.08 etc.) .

So when you buy your posi carrier and gears you need to match them up.
I had the same issue with my gto, it had 3.08 ratio-so I went with the auburn pro series unit and 3.55 gears. no problem with the change. I would really look into the eaton units(was not out when i did mine), they might be a better bang for the buck.
