Motorcycle Detailing
March 10, 2006 08:04PM
<HTML>Hello All, I have been approached by an owner of an independant motorcycle repair shop who informed me that several customers keep asking for detail services for their cycles. He believes it is a viable business and will let me use his location rent free to detail bikes which will drive traffic to his business. He will also cross promote to his clients for me ! I live in a major city that does not seem to offer this service that I can find (Note: I am also a rider familiar with the motorcycle community) I am considering this but only for motorcycles since it is very unique and thousands of motorcyclists live in my city.

Is their a lot of demand for this type of service? Is it too narrow a market to target?

Other questions include:
1. Is this worth while due to the complicated and time consuming nature of detailing/polishing bikes?
2. If viable, what is a fair charge for wash, mini-detail, and full detail?
3. What about insurance and liability risk? (this is a major concern for me)
4. Does anyone have experience approaching high end custom builders and cycle dealers regarding the offering of this service on their premises to drive business traffic? What about offering free motorcycle detail workshop special events?

Please provide any advice, thoughts or comments that you think would be helpful in my evaluation of this business concept. Thanks!

<HTML>I love doing bikes. If I could make a living ONLY detailing bikes I would.

I charge just as much to do a bike as I do a car. It tkes me the same amount of time.

wash-$45
wash and wax-$120
full detail (depends if you have allot of chrome, aluminum to polish, saddle bags, etc....) $180- $350

<HTML>I just detailed my first bike today- a Burgman 650, and I've got a couple of questions for you.

What do you use to clean
1. rubber on the kickboards (for scooters)
2. seats
3. tires (since the brakes aren't concealed like cars)

I used my Mother's Back to Black for the rubber, trim and seats, and it didn't seem sticky, but I want to make sure I do it right to avoid riding problems for the rider...

Any other tips or tricks? I'd appreciate it!

<HTML>Joe:

I too detailed my first bike the other day,

It was nice No carpets, Windows, Vacuuming....

The only pain in the A@# was not having a bike jack to lift the bike to do the wheels..

If the bike shop owner starts bringing me more work then I will invest in a bike jack..</HTML>

<HTML>Get yourself a bike jack. They cost under $100.

With the bike inthe air you can turn the wheels and access everything easier.

Also this is where DI water really helps out.

DON'T LEAN ON IT THOUGH!</HTML>
