What's it worth?

What's it worth?

We have a 1971 GTO convertible. The condition is fair minus, not original engine, missing data plate. The car needs a complete (frame off)restoration-including sand blasting, repair welding and new interior. The questions are:

What's it worth (approximately) now?

What will it be worth (approximately) after the restoration to get it to Very Good plus?

I would look at several locations to estimate the value of unrestored and restored condition. It will hurt that you don't have the orignal engine and the data plate missing will make it less desirable. They can be reproduced if you get the info from PHS to document your car. I would look at Hemmings' web site and on Ebay for prices. It also depends on if you are building it for yourself or to sell as to whether it is worth it or not.

Doug:

Thanks for your reply. We'll probably wind up keeping it. We have a spare 400 from a '79 Trans-Am (Pontiac, not Olds). We found a source(s) for new Data plates from an old issue of MuscleCar Review (any idea how to contact any of the people that were there thru e-mail?). The real problem is finding the time and $ in dealing with a major restoration project.

Ken, are you sure you want to restore this car?
What is it worth? If if was a verified 71 Judge convertible, plenty!
However, any GTO without the original engine is not worth much at all and dont let any buddy or "pal" tell you otherwise.
71 model, not the most desirable by any means. Not trying to discourage you but be truthful. You probably will wind up spending way, way, more than the car is worth by the time you finish, and again, you must get the correct 71 GTO engine back in this car or your "investment" will be mostly lost. Have you considered buying a GTO in very good condition for about the same money you would spend on a restoration?
