The 421 engine was created for the 1965 2+2. This was a Pontiac Catalina, gold with white interior, 421 tri-power and a hurst 4 speed tranny. This car was only marketed 1 year. The 421 was experimented with in the 1966 GTO but was turned down. Some of the 421 GTO's were claimed by GM exec's and kind of faded away. There are still some in the basement of Pontiac Motor Division plantby larry ward - Pontiac GTO Forum
I worked at Pontiac Motors during this time period and there was no 400 motor until 1967. The old Pontiac plant has a few GTO's stored in the basement with 421 tri-power on them.by larry ward - Pontiac GTO Forum
I did snag one off the assembly line. My 65 GTO was built in my plant. I had it for two years when it was stolen and totaled out by the thief. It was a teal mist green convertible with black interior and I was 17 years old (really brings back memories). Anyway, I hope to get another one in the near future. I have started my search already.by larry ward - Pontiac GTO Forum
hey Patrick, I'm the guy who worked at pontiac. The basement is full of pontiac prototypes and experimental cars. To answer your questions about a restored GTO. If it were me and I could afford it I would buy one already restored. Restored GTO's are a little pricey though. I have been looking for a 65 and they run from 30k to 70k depending if numbers match and what condition it isby larry ward - Pontiac GTO Forum
the headers I saw were cast iron 4 inch headers. the headers took the hp up from 365 to about 390 hp. I don't know why they didn't produce them with headers but at the time they were experimenting with a 485ci engine that ran 450 hp. There were even a few experimental GTO's with 421 tripower in them. I think about 50-100 of them. Pontiac Motors in Pontiac, Mi has the basemby larry ward - Pontiac GTO Forum
I worked at the pontiac plant from 1965 to 1997. When the GTO's were coming down the line I only saw 1, 69 GTO and 1, 69 Grand Prix with factory headers. Those two cars were special orders bound for Saudi Arabia.by larry ward - Pontiac GTO Forum
Hello, My name is dean and I owned a 1965 GTO in 1965. Anyone who tells you that a 396 chevelle will beat a GTO has never raced a GTO. My GTO ate 396's for breakfast and put down many a corvette. Don't be fooled. That little 389 tripower was HOT. regards Deanby larry ward - Pontiac GTO Forum
